On January 18th 2025, Pierre Poilievre, the opposition leader and the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada participated in the Harvest of Hope event in Toronto, Canada. This event was staged around the annual Tamil festival of Thai Pongal.
Speaking at this event, Poilievre said: “It will be Conservative Prime Minister Pierre Poilivere who will lead the world in seeking prosecutions in international court of the Rajapaksas and other criminals who have persecuted Tamil people.”
Does this mean Poilievre wants to make this world a just place with the use of international laws and the International Criminal Court (ICC)? No, absolutely not. He was merely turning this Harvest of Hope event into a Harvest of Tamil votes event. He just joined the long list of lowlife Canadian politicians who have been riding the backs of Canadian Tamils (and other ethnic groups) by collecting their votes.
Unfortunately the record shows Poilivere has no faith in any international laws and just wants to turn the International Criminal Court (ICC) into a kangaroo court. This would allow him to ride on the back of the ICC to harvest ethnic votes whenever he needs it.
When Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asserted that Canada, as a state party to the ICC, would support the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in Canada on an ICC warrant about two months earlier, Poilivere called it “ridiculous”.
Yes, that is how Poilivere wanted the ICC to civilize the world; arrest that guy, just not my guy.
The war in Sri Lanka ended in 2009. Even the Rajapaksa clan in Sri Lanka had lost power years ago.
But the biggest question here is where has Poilivere been for the last 16 years? The truth is he has been a small town politician going after local votes in a single riding until now and had no reason to go after Tamils’ vote who live in faraway ridings. But now in 2025, he is contesting to be the Prime Minister of Canada and desperately needs every vote from coast to coast. This is why Poilivere sheds crocodile tears now.
It is too sad that even Canadian politicians, regardless of political affliction, behave lower than the third world politicians.
As a Sri Lankan Tamil I want to tell Poilivere and all those Canadian dirty politicians this: Sri Lankan forces are at least one step better than the IDF, the forces Poilivere and other Canadian politicians unconditionally support in Gaza. Even the surrendered LTTE members are not asked to leave Sri Lanka and go to Egypt or Jordan.
Stop riding on the back of foreign conflicts to collect cheap votes. It is just pathetic.
